Adobe homestead among olive trees on the Elfin Forest knoll at golden hour

Elfin Forest · Escondido, California

The house on the knoll still looks south.

Aliso Ranch is Las Violetas — the adobe Elena Couts Dear paid to raise on the old Minter homestead, CA-SDI-4674 — restored in part, farmed again, and opened for small gatherings above Escondido Creek.

The house Elena built

She bought the estate. She named it. She finished the house.

Daughter of Cave J. Couts and Ysidora Bandini Couts. She purchased Minter’s land, called it Las Violetas, and paid to raise the knoll adobe in 1897. Parker built it. Their five sons grew up in it.

Looking south from the adobe over Escondido Creek Conservancy land

The view

Unchanged to the south, because the creek was kept.

From the knoll the valley still reads as it did when Las Violetas was occupied. South of the ranch, the Escondido Creek Conservancy holds a large stretch of land, including the meandering creek. Olives still stand.
